SIETAR Europa Congress 2000
Cultural identity
and diversity in building Europe
The 10th Annual Congress
was held March 2001 in Brussels, Belgium.
Over 300 delegates from 33 countries attended
and participated in over 90 plenary sessions,
presentations and workshops under the Congress
theme of "Cultural identity and diversity
in building Europe".
A collection of 42 papers
based on these talks and workshops were compiled
into a Congress Proceedings book published in
April, 2002.
The main tracks under
which these papers are grouped are: Concepts and
Theory; Communication, language and culture; Policy
making; Business, management and diversity; Linguistics;Agenda
2000; Psychology; Sociology; Health and medicine;
Migration and Refugee movements; and, Anthropology.

Heritage and Progress
The 8th Annual Congress
was held April 1 - 5, 1998 in Bath, England.
Over 300 delegates from
25 countries attended and participated in over
80 plenary sessions, presentations and workshops
under the Congress theme of "Heritage and
Progress – from the past to the future in
intercultural understanding".
A collection of 50 papers
based on these talks and workshops was compiled
into a Congress Proceedings book, published in
early 2000.

SIETAR Europa Congress
1997
Images, Cultures,
Communication
The 7th Annual Congress
was held February 27 - March 2, 1997 in Poitiers,
France, in cooperation with SIETAR France.
The venue of this bilingual
event combined the historical past of the city
of Poitiers with present and futuristic features
of the Futuroscope site and park. Also the theme
of the Congress "Images Cultures, Communication:
Images, Signs, Symbols; The Cultural Coding of
Communication" / "Images, Cultures,
Communication: Images, Signes, Symboles: Le Codage
Culturel de la Communication" combined presentations,
workshops and focused discussions from a variety
of disciplines and perspectives. The five main
tracks were Intercultural Communication: General
Issues and Diverse Approaches; Otherness, Perception
of Self and Others; Strategies for Identity; From
Language Teaching to Intercultural Experience
and Learning; International Business; International
Companies, Marketing and Advertising, Management
and Negotiation Styles.
A selection of papers
of the Congress has been published.

SIETAR Europa Congress
1996
Images, Cultures,
Communication
The 6th Annual Congress
was held May 28 - June 2, 1996, in Munich, Germany
as a joint congress with SIETAR International
and SIETAR Deutschland.
The Congress on "Meeting
the Intercultural Challenge: Effective Approaches
in Research, Education, Training, Business, and
Community" attracted nearly 900 participants
from 40 different countries. The Congress provided
a forum for exploring issues relevant to crossing
borders, building international careers, and to
meeting the challenge of facilitating the experiences
of those who live and work in multicultural societies.
Over 200 sessions and more than 350 presenters
addressed research results, training approaches,
and management practice in the context of organisations,
community interaction, and education.
The Congress Proceedings
contain a selection of the most relevant and interesting
presentations (over 500 pages).

SIETAR Europa Congress
1995
Uniqueness in Unity
The 5th Annual Congress
was held March 9 - 12, 1995, in Prague, The Czech
Republic.
For the theme of "Uniqueness
in Unity: The Significance of Cultural Identity
in European Cooperation", 234 interculturalists
from 30 countries gathered in the Czech capital.
The aim of the Congress was to further emphasize
the East-West dialogue started in Finland. The
main themes were: Education, Business, Migration
and Media, and the publication contains a collection
of papers given in various presentation styles
at the Congress, including reports and papers
on research and professional experience, workshops,
working sessions and groups as well as round table
sessions.

Europe on the Move:
Fusion or Fission?
The 4th Annual Congress
was held March 11 - 13, 1994, in Jyväskylä,
Finland.
Participants from Europe
and beyond, representing 24 countries, gathered
together to discuss and reflect the theme from
three predominant perspectives: constructs of
culture, research and fieldwork, and education
and training.
The publication covers
46 papers, and they represent academic contributions
as well as documentation of practical experience
dealing with issues of the meeting of cultures
in different professions and settings.
