How underlying pedagogical models influence education and training in different cultural contexts

Every culture either produces or adapts different theories and models of learning, which influence teaching and training practice. Understanding Intercultural pedagogy allows teachers and trainers to be familiar with these underlying and often implicit models. Recognizing their cultural origins, the consequences on different learning styles, and how to construct knowledge taking into account the learners.
Various schools of thought have influenced the way we think about learning. There will be first an exploration of Asian, African and different religious thinking on teaching and learning

Then the workshop will be conducted in three parts:

  • The participants will discover important models that have been influential in the development of learning theory. Many philosophers and psychologists have developed pedagogical models. Cognitive, humanistic, behavioral and social models are the result of great pedagogical movements of the 20th century. Each model is based on a complex and rigorous process. The trainer needs to know these different models in order to develop their qualities in teaching/training.
These models are influenced by both their historical and geographical (western) origins. It is necessary to both explore how these models "travel" to other cultures and are received and interpreted in a globalised educational world, and also look at other cultural approaches from Asian or African examples.

  • The second aspect of the workshop will deal with an analysis of the participants teaching/learning approaches and exploring the cultural origins and the contexts of application. We will look at implications for each of the participants, through the use of a questionnaire.

  • The third aspect deals with the important issue of the gap between the intention of the teacher/trainer (choice of model/method) and the real delivery application, due to interpretation, cultural context, or institutional limits. This will be learnt through the use of case studies

The workshop will be an interactive experience using self-diagnostic tools, lecture/debates, case studies and films.
