| There is a growing need for interculturalists to understand individual differences. Many of their clients by now have extensive experience of living abroad; many companies have invested into the intercultural development of their staff. The better interculturalists can assess individual learning needs, the more effective their interventions will be. To what extent do intercultural assessment tools support practitioners in assessing such needs, and how should they decide for a given tool? Answering these questions can be difficult: Most instruments are proprietary and require certification. Our objective is to acquaint interculturalists with five instruments, each representing a category of available tools; to present findings that help to better understand their potential and underlying assumptions; and to explore how these tools can enhance learning.
We
will first discuss intercultural competence and to what extent it can be measured
and enhanced. The IRC, MPQ, and IDI will be debriefed in the morning, the CW and
ICSI in the afternoon. Results of a study involving the IDI and the MPQ will deepen
our understanding of what the tools assess. We will furthermore discuss how the
tools can enhance intercultural training/consulting, qualification processes,
if any, the costs of qualification and use, and how to purchase them. | |||
