Techniques for Creative Training
The workshop will be conducted simultaneously in French and English.

This is a hands-on interactive workshop that will contribute to the best practices for the field of intercultural training and education by initiating participants to techniques for designing innovative training activities. It will give those teaching/training in the field of intercultural communication numerous examples and concrete tools for creating exercises based on their specific needs and public. A brief exploration of what's at stake in the intercultural arena, a definition of intercultural pedagogy and the responsibilities of its practitioners will all serve as opportunities to illustrate a variety of techniques and demonstrate the pertinence of taking a pluri-disciplinary approach. Discussion will emphasize that all approaches have their limits and that they can and should be adapted to the cultural specificity of the public involved.

Participants will be introduced to the concept of Frame Games, a technique commonly used by gaming experts and in English language learning, which consists of creating learning activities based on the mechanics of another, usually well-known, game or technique (e.g. bingo, tic-tac-toe, seven families and memory). Game mechanics are first chosen according to their appropriateness for the culture involved and the teacher/trainer then provides the learning content. This approach can address a wide variety of themes and audiences and the possibilities are practically limitless.

Mini-groups will work together in the creation of an activity. Each group will be asked to clearly define the specific public and learning context that their activity is intended to address. Activities will actually be conducted with all participants of the group so that everyone has the opportunity 'to put theory into practice'.

The day's program will conclude with debriefing skills. The how's, when's and why's of debriefing and feedback will be presented and discussed in terms of their fundamental role in turning the experience of an activity into durable learning.

All participants will receive a booklet with a synthesis of the theoretical foundations of the workshop, guidelines and instructions for creating exercises as well as numerous examples of activities that the presenters have used successfully.
