Unlike other books that will tell you what American culture is, What’s Up America? tackles the why questions foreigners ask Americans and no one wants to answer. Why do American children leave their family homes at 18? Why are Americans so overweight? Why are Americans so religious? This book investigates the why, uncovers the culture’s hidden rules, and for the first time, reveals the American psyche to foreigners.

The Culture for Business Series uses a new logic to look at issues facing business managers and leaders in today's global, multicultural context. Each book will focus on one key aspect of business management and culture's essential role in that area. The series breaks away from the traditional management texts that are overly influenced by Anglo-Saxon research and thinking. While the majority of existing texts tends to focus on knowledge OF cultures, the books in this series are concerned with knowledge FOR cultures by providing a new conceptual framework for dealing with the business implications of culture. As such, the aim of the series is to provide a practical toolkit for managers and leaders by helping them develop a new mindset for working with and across cultures.

Five packages containing four books each will be given away.

Polly Platt donates one copy of each of the following two books:

French or Foe?
By Polly Platt

French or Foe?, the perennial bestseller by Polly Platt -- over 150,000 copies sold -- has been for years the business, travel and academic reference for understanding Franco-American communication differences and for learning how to handle the French. The new new third edition deals with the latest vitriolic exchanges between these two 200-year-old friends and allies, and goes to the heart of the emotional American discomfort with France.

In French or Foe?, Platt takes you step by step -- peppered with funny real-life anecdotes -- through the things you have to know in order to interact comfortably with French people and to do business effectively with them, from explanations of the Six Politeness Codes to buying bread and dealing with the bureaucracy to, finally, what happens in French companies and why it happens... why French meetings don't end in decisions... why you're better off not saying "tu" at the office... why they might be late... why they might seem rude and arrogant to foreigners....

The third edition -- with the addition of an Index -- highlights recent events and examines the Internet and computer revolution of the last few years in France. Interviews with American and French executives explain the differences -- and the similarities -- in procedures in the workplace compared to five years ago.

According to Baron Elie de Rothschild, the book is "absolutely remarkable, very well observed, brilliant and very, very funny."

Savoir-Flair! 211 Tips for Enjoying France and the French
By Polly Platt

Why are Americans and other foreigners intimidated by the French? For just one reason: France is different.
Savoir-Flair! 211 Tips for Enjoying France and the French takes the fright out of France without disturbing the mystique.. and the pleasures. The Chicago Tribune calls it "a fun and entertaining guide to French cultural do's and don'ts" while Theresa Conroy in the Philadelphia Daily News writes, "Polly Platt not only offers practical information, but helps span the cultural divide by giving explanations for what appear to be obscure and peculiar French customs."

The book tells you which three words of French unlock a warm welcome, how to charm French waiters, how to entertain business contacts and how to intrigue French women and French men.

Travelers tell their tales of generous French help and the automatic French response: "It's nothing. C'est normal!"

All the chapters start with the word "Enjoying..." and include arrival strategies at airports and hotels, bathroom customs, crossing streets, asking directions, riding the Métro, driving and cycling in Paris, customer service and dogs. In the section "Enjoying Eating Out in France," you'll find out about French chefs, French delicacies and the etiquette of business entertaining. The Fourth part tells about handling the trains, motoring and bicycle tours. It gives suggestions for picking a certain village for renting or buying.

"In a country where small gestures speak volumes, this guide is indispensable," says William Tomicki in the New York Times syndicate.

Painting title: "Roussillion I"; technique: Oil on Canvaspaper; Dimensions: 34 x 50 cm.

The donation to the Tombola will be 1 of a maximum of 10 prints of this painting, numbered, guaranteed and with the original signature of the artist, including frame and passe-partout, with a market value of approx. EUR 350.
The original painting is at the very moment being finished in Amsterdam and will be on exposition during the SIETAR Congress. (Market price approx EUR 1100).
Background of her technique is that it has been pencil-drawn in Roussillion de Provence - France in May 2005, and painted in Geneviève's own handmade oilpaints using the original color pigments from the mineral ochre-mines around Roussillion.

About the Artist:

Geneviève's life in art started with training in various crafts such as weaving and ceramics when she attended the Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum School.

Her university studies took place in both Michigan, USA and England. After finishing her university degree as a drama major she attended Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. At Cranbrook she was awarded a scholarship and studied graphics, drawing and ceramics under the tutelage of Toshiko Takiazu. Geneviève moved to Midland, Michigan where she joined an artist co-op which was sponsored by Alden Dow, a renowned student of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and designed amongst other buildings the Phoenix Art Museum.

The artist co-op was an ideal situation with working areas for ceramics, graphics, jewelry making, sculpting and painting. A number of her ceramics were selected for an exhibition selected by the curators of the Art Association of Midland.

Geneviève's life has been enriched by living in different cultures, in the USA and Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France and West-Africa.

Her paintings reflect the variety of life experiences and many interests in arts, theater, music, nature and different cultures.

Her technique reflects interest in texture, color and layering, in oil on canvas, paper and/or wood.
Besides her expositions in Nice and currently in Amsterdam, further planning is ongoing for new expositions in Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Rome and Atlanta.

For a full CV (English/French/German/Dutch) and a selection of Geneviève's oeuvre, please visit her website: http://www.genevieveart.nl

"Au Contraire! Figuring Out the French" and "Français - Américains, ces différences qui nous rapprochent " by Gilles Asselin & Ruth Mastron

Value of each of the books: EUR 20,--

Since the publication of our book "Au Contraire! Figuring Out the French" by Intercultural Press (www.interculturalpress.com), it has become a bestseller and been received enthusiastically by French and US readers alike:

"As a French native who was transferred to the US headquarters, I wish I had received this kind of support instead of the 'sink or swim' approach. . .'Au Contraire' should be required reading for anybody planning to live in France for some time or interacting with French people on a regular basis, or any French expatriate who wants to make sense of what it is to be French. . .This is a gem. This is THE reference. 'Don't leave home without it!'"

"'Au Contraire' is more than a book on France, the French language, or a trifle on French 'something.' This book touches the essence of what it means to be French. The behind-the-scene look at the history, symbols, language, and customs is truly intriguing. The [analysis] of such things as interpersonal relations, socialism, education, and other elements of French life is a treasure for the person who desires to live in France, if for only a short time. One of the most remarkable things about the book is the emphasis showing the inseparability between the language and the land: being French is speaking the language, and don't forget it! It's a must for expats of any sort. I read the hefty book in a matter of days. It's just that good."

"Luscious detail here, and historical perspective. I've lived in France for a number of years, and everything contained in this book is accurate and in depth. Bravo to Asselin and Mastron for their major contribution to deciphering the French culture."
