    NEWS FROM GERMANY

    Board changes

Three new board members were elected by the General Assembly on the 20th of November: Julie Shimizu (Deutsche Bank), Christiane Barho (Interkulturelles Coaching) sowie Steffen Henkel (cifa crossculture). They are replacing Christoph Barmeyer, Anne Pajarinen and Semira Soraya-Kandan who didn't stand for re-election or left the board for personal reasons (removal to Finland). Julie Shimizu and Christiane Barho will take over responsibility for organising events and for the SD website. Steffen Henkel will be the new treasurer.

    Thematic networks

In addition to the various and partly very active regional groups SD envisages a thematic network structure for the future. The thematic networks are supposed to provide the opportunity for SD members to link with other interculturalists who share an interest in a particular topic or field of activity. In order to promote this network structure SD plans to hold an Open-Space event in June 2005.

    SD Symposium 2006

The last two large SD congresses have been held in connection with the SIETAR Europa and SIETAR Austria (2002 in Vienna and 2004 in Berlin). For March 2006 SD plans a large scale event which is going to focus particularly on the intercultural scene in Germany. The idea of the coming event is to enhance the diversity within SD by strengthening the links to interculturalists in the social field and the academic field and by promoting exchange between the various fields of intercultural practice and research.

    SIETAR AUSTRIA SALUTES 2004

This year we continued one of our favourite activities "Culture Talk im Cafe Prückel", a successful series of lectures and discussions given by key-note speakers invited to SIETAR Austria and other interested participants.

    These were the topics:

    • "About the ants and other Austrians" by Daniel Glattauer and Michael Frank, authors of humorous books about Austrians - 14.01.2004·
    • "Image of a diplomat-job" by Embassador Dr. Brix, envoys Dr. Rochel and Pawlitschek narrated about their work and intercultural experiences – 17.03.2004
    • "One world? Challenges of Intecultural Marketing" by Chris Start, Vice-President Fabric Care by Procter & Gamble, provided examples of international marketing - 21.04.2004 in English
    • "Culture in international Organisations" by Sergio Gardelliano, told of his experience as Senior Organisational Learning Officer at UNIDO and intercultural aspects of work in an international organisation – 1.12.2004 in English

Highlights of the year were two Intercultural Outdoor Workshops, which took place on the 4th of June and the 2nd of October 2004.

These were train-the-trainer seminars, which demonstrated how intercultural and outdoor training can be combined, opening new perspectives and views. Both workshops were so popular, that we decided to resume the series again next year.

Any SIETAR Europa members, who would like to participate in this kind of workshop are cordially invited and will be offered the special SIETAR member price.

Other events for the coming year 2005 are still in the planning stage. We will announce our events calendar in coming newsletters.

SIETAR Austria wishes you a Happy New Year!

    GREETINGS FROM SIETAR UK

Thank you for the opportunity to share some of our news as we complete our 5th year as SIETAR UK. We have had a very eventful year and I would like to first and foremost thank all of the SIETAR UK Committee Members, Philip O’Conner, Donal Lynch, Stephan Dahl, Anke Middleman-Beal, and Maria Jicheva, who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to make events happen and run the organisation to a highly professional standard.

During the past year we have worked really hard as a committee to provide a more rounded service to our members both from the information gathered and updated on our website to running regular events.

Our spring event on the 6th of March was a whole-day event at Kings College in London. The theme was The Business of Culture – and the speakers addressed a range of issues around the overall topic of culture and business. Invited speakers were Charles Hampden-Turner, Peter Franklin, Rosina Marquez Reiter and Helen Spencer-Oatey and the topics discussed were:

    • Diversity and Innovation: Why the inclusion of culturally diverse persons fosters creativity.
    • " Trouble on the phone in Montevideo" - Is the client ever right?
    • Anglo-German Management Dyscommunication: Insights from Case Studies
    • Working Collaboratively across Nations: the eChina Experience.

The evaluations of the event were excellent and the turnout was one our best ever yet with almost 90 of our members in attendance.

Our summer event took place on the 17th and 18th of July and was in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth where we co-sponsored the event. The event was entitled: “Responding to the needs of the Chinese Learner” and was aimed at our academic audiences.

SIETAR UK was delighted to have the opportunity to co-sponsor the event and wish to thank the University of Portsmouth for their inclusion. During the event SIETAR UK hosted a wine reception on the evening of the 17th July and we were delighted to see many of you attend. SIETAR UK also awarded £300.00 in bursaries for attending students.

In September, we were all highly entertained and educated by Paul Saunders, who presented at our evening event and enlightened us all on "Creative Techniques in Intercultural training". It was highly creative and everyone had fantastic fun.

Our end of year event in December 2004 was held on 2nd of December at the Landsdown Club in London. It also gave us and opportunity to thank all of our members for their continued support and was a really great opportunity for many to network and get to know colleagues and peers in the industry.

We are very excited to announce that our next Business of Culture Event will be on Saturday 12th March in London and our Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Hofstede. Book early to reserve a space.

On the 9th and 10th of July 2005 we will be holding our summer even entitled "Intercultural Communication in a Globalised World" at Middlesex University, London, UK. If you wish to take part in presenting on a topic of expertise relating to the theme please visit our website and following the instructions calling for papers. Again, please book early to reserve a space.

The SIETAR UK Committee meet via conference call on the last Friday of every month and also meet face to face once a quarter. All of you are most welcome to submit agenda items for the Committee to discuss at any of our meetings or if you have suggestions regarding events, presentations, speakers or suitable venues we would be delighted to hear from you. We hope these events for 2004 are of interest to you and should you require further information or have any queries please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of the other committee members. Than you in advance for your continued support during the past year and we look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming evens during 2005.

    Dee Ryan
    Chairperson SIETAR UK
